10 Interesting Stats on Working from Home

The concept of workplace has now expanded beyond the cubicles. Working is no longer associated with going to “the office.” We’ve witnessed a steady growth in the number of people working from home on any work day. Over here we discuss interesting insights that prove that working from home is the new workplace reality.

1. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, about 24% of the working population did all or a part of their work or at home in 2015. 

2. Flexibility in scheduling and options for work-from-home are the two main factors that influence an employee’s decision to take up or leave a job, as per the survey by Gallup. Employees are now pushing the organizations to break the age-old structures and policies that influenced the concept of work and office so far. The practice of working remotely is considered beneficial by many employees and employers. As per the survey, a large section of the employers and employees agreed that remote workers are more productive. Also, this flexibility helps in breaking gender gaps.

3. When it comes to employee engagement, the survey by Gallup also found that workers who work remotely feel equally engaged. As per the survey, those who spent 60%-80% of their time working remotely had the highest engagement rates.

4. Working remotely increases employee efficiency. A study named "What Leaders Need To Know About Remote Workers" that with fewer distractions, the efficiency & productivity of remote workers is high. 91% of remote workers said they "get more work done when working remotely”. 

5. Improved quality of life and personal satisfaction are two factors that motivate people to work remotely. In a survey by CoSo Cloud it was found that about 45% people agreed that they get more sleep when they work from home or from any other location. 35% agreed to get more exercise and 42% of them are eating healthy. The study also reports that 44% of those who participated agreed to have a more positive attitude while 53% reported reduced stress levels. 51% of the participants were able to spend more time with their better half. All of these factors added to their job satisfaction levels.

6. Remote workers mostly connect with their employers through digital communication and collaboration tools. The survey by CoSo Cloud found that 88% of the remote workers connect through emails while 47% use instant messaging. 36% prefer video conferences and 32% use VoIP or Skype.

7. Mobile devices now have desktop-like features helping remote workers to manage their work effectively from anywhere. About 40% of the total surveyed persons agreed that they do half of their total work on a tablet, smartphone or any other mobile device. 

8. Working from home also lowers stress levels. A survey report called “State of Telecommuting 2014” released by PGi found that 82% of the remote workers reported lower stress levels. It also found that 80% of the workers reported higher morale when they work from home.

9. A Stanford University study found that allowing people to work remotely reduced employee turnover rates by 50%. The report was based on statistics about work-from-home options offered by a China-based firm listed on NASDAQ with 16,000 employees. It suggested that the option of work-from-home was extremely profitable for the company.

10. Work-from-home helps reduce real estate cost. According to a report by Forbes magazine, companies reported a significant decrease in their operating cost. The report lists Aetna, an insurance company where out of 35,000 employees, 14,500 work remotely. The company saved $78 million per year by shedding 2.7 million square feet of office space. With options for remote working, American Express’s annual savings increased from $10 million to $15 million.
